The “What Moves Her” podcast welcomed their latest guest, Anywhere Executive Vice President & Chief People Officer Tanya Reu-Narvaez, for a recent episode exploring her career path and how she has helped solve many of the challenges around advancement for women in the real estate industry.

Tanya detailed her two-decade career at Anywhere, including an initially rocky start as she absorbed the former lack of women, especially Latina women or other people of color, among the company’s upper ranks. Today, those numbers have been starkly reversed, as Anywhere boasts an executive management team that is 50% female, along with a global workforce made up of 70% women – among the best such numbers in real estate or any other major industry.

“We were in a female-dominated industry, but that was at the agent level. When you started to dissect and look at franchisees, and then from a corporate perspective, branch managers all the way up through senior leaders, women were underrepresented if not absent in some cases,” Tanya said. “And so it took a lot of education, a lot of pushing the envelope, pushing our practices, and attracting leaders that were going to drive the change that was needed.”

The conversation continued to cover recent changes in workplace dynamics that have accompanied a rise in remote work and dependence on technology, which have necessitated a corresponding shift in how effective leaders interact with their staff.

“Studies show that there’s a lack of what I refer to as human-centric leadership, and that’s a real problem, because when you’re in an industry like we are….you have to be able to motivate people, and understand what motivates them,” she said. “It’s not a one-size fits all, and frankly the connection is more important now than it’s ever been, and it’s also more complex. You have to really understand people individually and where they are, given the diversity that exists across the workforce today.”
