The What Moves Her podcast recently welcomed its latest Anywhere executive, Anywhere Franchise Brands CEO Liz Gehringer, for a frank discussion on leadership style and her own path from attorney to high-powered real estate leader.

Flanked by hosts Lindsay Listanski and Sherry Chris, Liz reflected on her path from Anywhere’s longtime Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer to her current position, and how she navigates an executive role in a rapidly evolving business.

She first shared her thoughts on how she connects with and pushes her teams to continue meeting and exceeding their goals, while balancing a sense of compassion and care alongside high expectations.

“I think that when you show people that you’re aligned with them personally on a personal level, that you do care about their success and their career….that you will get those results from that person,” she said. “You’re really just, by caring for them, allowing them to perform at their highest level.”

Later in the episode, Liz addressed the added pressure that women often feel when taking the stage for a speaking appearance, often due to a sense that they may be judged for their appearance. She discussed her own method for dealing with those challenges by embracing them – ensuring her hair was freshly done or wearing something that she feels inherently confident in, allowing her to, as she puts it, “slay stage.”

“You have to do the things that give you comfort, but you should know that the content is the thing that you’re fantastic at,” she said. “You’re there talking about the things you know.”

Liz also expounded on the inevitable setbacks that mark any career, no matter how successful, and the mindset that has allowed them to translate them into growth – both personal and professional.

“Business loss is usually an opportunity. I can’t think of an example that isn’t an opportunity,” she said. “So if you lose a customer, for example, there’s an opportunity to find a new or different customer in that space or learn why exactly, listen for exactly why you lost a customer….I think it’s the greatest teacher.”
